Beyond the academic attractions that Cambridge has to offer - the beautiful colleges, breathtaking architecture and tonnes of history, to name just a few - there is also a vast number of unique and unusual tours, that include something for everyone. From ghostly tales to dark histories (of which there are many), Cambridge's alternative and slightly quirky tours cater to those seeking adventure, mystery, and, for others, some spine-tingling action. This blog is going to be a fun one as we take a look at a selection of our personal favourites; if you don’t find something that appeals to you, then we will be very, very shocked…quite literally!Ghost Tours:
Cambridge may be known for its academic excellence, but it also has a dark side. Various tours offer a glimpse into the spookier side of its history. Cambridge’s centuries-old streets and ancient buildings make it a perfect setting for ghost stories and haunted tales. Do you dare give one a go?
One of the most reputable ‘spooktacular’ tours in the city is the official Cambridge Ghost Tour. Led by knowledgeable and engaging guides, these tours take their ‘victims’ to numerous haunted (or so they say) sites. Each stop on the tour is filled with stories that blend historical facts with chilling legends, including the tragic story of the Black Shuck, a ghostly dog said to haunt the city's outskirts. But we won’t give any more away…
For those who crave a more theatrical experience, the Haunted Cambridge Tour is an excellent choice. It combines good old-fashioned storytelling with a touch of performance as guides in period costumes lead you through the city’s haunted hotspots. The tour is not just about ghost stories, though; it also provides a fascinating insight into Cambridge’s history and architecture, making it a popular choice for those looking for a bit of education along the way.
The Creepy Cambridge Tour (run by Terrible Tours) introduces you to some of the area’s most colourful characters: the victims of horrific punishments, the hangman’s house, and maybe even a visit to one of the most haunted roads in England. This is a popular choice, so book early.
Unconventional Tours:
But aside from the ghosts and the murders, what other weird and wonderful tours does Cambridge offer its visitors? It’s not all doom and gloom, we promise.
Foodies (like us) can enjoy various Pudding Clubs around the city. These tours explore the city’s culinary history, with a particular focus on its famous desserts. So, for those with a sweet tooth, this must be top of your ‘things to do in Cambridge bucket list’. As well as visiting some of the top eateries in the town, you will also have the opportunity to sample local specialities like Cambridge burnt cream (sibling of the classic crème brûlée) and other seriously naughty delights. Where do we sign up? Well, you have to find one first; they are often top secret.
Cambridge Spy Walk is also something a little different as it delves into the city’s connections to the world of spies and espionage, particularly during the Cold War era. It is not a tour you will stumble across just anywhere. It is a little gem. You will visit locations associated with past spies, including the colleges where they studied and the pubs where they reportedly held hush-hush meetings.
Outdoor Tours:
Cambridge offers several outdoor tours; the options really are endless. We suggest you consider exploring from a different perspective with a Canoe or Kayak Tour on the River Cam. These tours offer a unique way to see the city’s iconic sights, including the beautiful gardens behind the university colleges and the architecture of the buildings along the riverbank. Hold on…why haven’t we mentioned the punt tours yet?? They are by far the most famous mode of transport in the area. Scrap the canoes; grab yourself a punt and a bottle of bubbly, and you are ready to go.
For those who enjoy cycling, Cambridge Bike Tours offers a more active way to see the city, but it is harder to indulge in treats while cycling, so that’s something to bear in mind. And don’t forget the famous open-top buses that you will see everywhere. These Hop-on-hop-off Tours are almost as popular as the punts when it comes to seeing a sizeable amount of the city in one day. But it’s all about personal preference…water or road? Only you can decide. Bikes and buses aren’t exactly ‘quirky OR unusual’, but they deserved a mention in our blog nonetheless.
Family-Friendly Tours:
If you’re visiting Cambridge with family, there are plenty of tours that cater to all ages, whether you are six or 60. Amongst the more family-friendly options is the Cambridge Treasure Hunt Tour, an interactive and engaging way for families to explore the city. Participants are given a map and a set of clues, leading them to various landmarks and hidden gems around Cambridge. Along the way, you’ll learn interesting facts and solve puzzles, making it a fun and educational experience for both kids and adults. If it keeps the kids occupied, then it’s a winner for us.
Throughout the year, there are various Cambridge Family Fun Tours designed specifically for families with young children. These tours combine sightseeing with activities and games that keep kids engaged and entertained. Guides share fascinating stories and fun facts about Cambridge’s history while incorporating interactive elements like quizzes and scavenger hunts. Others are self-led; it really is a mixed bag.
Cambridge’s unusual and varied tours offer something for every taste. So next time you find yourself in our beautiful city, come and discover one – or ten – of the many hidden adventures that make Cambridge truly unique. This leads us to the big question: which tour will you choose?
