What’s Trendy and What’s Not In 2024?

Published: 05/07/2024

When it comes to home interiors, the trends of 2024 are both a reflection of generational shifts and a celebration of individuality. This year so far, we are seeing a mix of nature-inspired aesthetics, fancy pants new gadgets, and a return to timeless styles with a modern twist. Basically, anything goes in 2024 if done in just the right way. The current trends include something for everyone; it is an exciting time for interior design and an opportunity to get creative with the rising popularity of social media platforms such as Etsy and Instagram.

Let’s Go Au Naturel

One of the standout trends of 2024 - and one of our favourites - is the emphasis on sustainability and eco-conscious design. We are very excited about this because it has been a long time coming. Homeowners are increasingly aware of their environmental footprint and are seeking ways to make their living space more eco-friendly. This manifests in several ways, from the materials chosen to the overall design. Natural materials like wood, stone, and clay are making a comeback, often sourced locally to reduce carbon footprints. Reclaimed wood, in particular, is gaining popularity for its uniqueness; no one wants a clone of everyone else's property, and ‘expressing individuality’ is the new buzzphrase!

In addition to natural eco-friendly materials, there is a growing preference for designs that connect our living spaces more closely with nature in other ways, too. We don’t mean just adding a few plants here and there (although that continues to be popular); we mean bringing natural elements into the home: large windows that allow for as much natural light as possible, quirky indoor gardens, and ‘living walls’ (what is that we hear you say) are becoming common features; each one not only enhancing the aesthetic appeal of a home but also improving air quality and overall well-being…fusing all the elements that modern-day homeowners want.

Voice Activated Everything….

Another major trend is the mix of technology with home decor. Smart homes are no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality – which is both scary and exciting rolled into one. Voice-activated assistants and smart lighting systems are becoming pretty standard in modern homes; you might even have some of these yourself. Who hasn’t got a video doorbell? Not many of us! The focus is shifting from merely having smart gadgets to creating a whole futuristic smart home experience.

What Else is Hot News for 2024?

When it comes to colour palettes, neutrals are still popular (us letting agents love a bit of magnolia), but they are now paired with rich, earthy tones and bold pops of colour…think luxury Centre Parc lodge! Terracotta and deep greens bring a sense of cosiness and that connection to nature that we keep harping on about. Meanwhile, bold colours like cobalt blue, emerald green, and mustard yellow are used as accents to add personality and a bit of self-expression.

Another big word this year is ‘texture’; homes are inviting you to touch and feel the different surfaces. The focus on texture extends to accessories, too, with handcrafted items like pottery, macramé wall hangings (we guarantee you have a friend who either makes them or owns one), and knitted throws becoming popular. You only have to look on social media to see the rapidly increasing passion for artisanal craftsmanship.

Open-concept living remains popular but with a twist – we seem to be using that word a lot, sorry. The trend has swayed towards creating distinct zones within these already trendy, open-plan spaces. This approach maintains an airy feel while creating designated areas for different activities, such as a cosy reading nook, a dedicated workspace, or a dining area. Clever use of furniture, rugs, and lighting can define these zones without the need for walls. Pretty smart, right? Working from home has never been such a luxury!

The kitchen, often considered the heart of the home, is also undergoing a transformation. For foodies like us, this is exciting news and something we are eager to learn more about. 2024 is all about hidden storage solutions, integrated appliances, and multifunctional islands. There is a move towards sleek, minimalist designs with clean lines and uncluttered surfaces. But don’t panic because there is also room for personalisation, with influencers such as Mrs Hinch helping you to achieve this…with a few cleaning tips thrown in, too, of course!

Bathrooms are becoming spa-like retreats, focusing on relaxation and luxury. With the rise of the self-love/self-care generation, freestanding tubs and walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads have become the norm for creating a serene and indulgent environment. And you know the use of smart technology that we mentioned earlier? It is making its way into bathrooms, too, with everything from built-in ceiling speakers to app-controlled water temperature settings becoming more common.

2024 Is A Mix Of So Much!

Since Covid 19 changed the pattern of working from home, there is now a need for spaces that can adapt to different functions throughout the day. Flexibility is key.

In terms of outdoor spaces, the big trend is to create an extension of the indoor living area. Outdoor kitchens (who doesn’t love a pizza oven?), comfortable seating areas, and even outdoor offices are the next big thing. These spaces are designed to be used all year round. Ok, there is no denying that the evenings can be pretty chilly here in the UK, but there is nothing more enjoyable than a fire pit, snuggly blanket and a huge mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows to take the edge off.

We hope we have given you plenty of inspiring ideas to consider. But really, there is only one main rule: to create a space that reflects your personality and meets your needs. As we move through 2024, it’s clear that our homes will continue to evolve, becoming more sustainable, crammed with technology, and tailored to our individual lifestyles. Exciting times!
